Can you briefly introduce yourself?

I am Nan JIAN, I graduated in 2020 and am currently Deputy Director, Corporate Communications, at a translation agency in China

Can you tell us about your academic background leading up to your degree at ISIT?

I obtained my bachelor’s degree in French Language and Literature at Fudan University in Shanghai. After that, I continued my studies in France at the Sorbonne, where I obtained my first master’s degree in Applied French Language. I then continued my studies at ISIT, where I obtained a second master’s degree in Intercultural Communication and Translation, with a language combination of Chinese-French-English. I completed two internships during my studies at ISIT: one at an agency for sworn translators and the other at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

In a few sentences, can you summarize the impact that the ISIT Master’s degree has had on your professional and personal life?

ISIT offers a culturally inclusive and very welcoming environment. My experience there was excellent. The ICT program perfectly matches my passions, and my current job fully incorporates the skills I acquired during the program: translation, communication, project management, website creation, etc. The courses were practical and career-oriented, which allowed me to acquire skills that my current employer often finds impressive – few translation graduates have such skills.

Can you describe your career path since graduating?

After graduating, I returned to China and joined a translation agency that provides language services to the United Nations. This company is a major player in the translation industry in China, and I really appreciate its professional approach. I started as a translation project manager, with responsibilities in translation and revision. Gradually, I became involved in corporate communications tasks, until I decided to focus most of my energy on corporate communications.

What have been your most notable professional achievements since graduating from ISIT?

I have been involved in the management, translation, and revision of many important interpreting and translation projects, such as those for UNESCO, UNOSSC, UNDGC, WIPO, and UNDP. I was also responsible for a large interpreting project for an international television program, simultaneously managing more than 30 interpreters working in over 10 languages. These are precisely the most challenging experiences that have given me the greatest sense of accomplishment.

What advice would you give to current master’s students in terms of their academic and professional experience?

Be as energetic as possible and don’t be afraid. Seize opportunities that come your way and turn them into springboards for your future development. Otherwise, you may one day regret not having acted in time.
